Travelling internationally may sound all fun and dreamy, till the real thing shows up–planning, packing, and making sure your documents are in order. Planning and packing are relatively easy tasks, one can always take suggestions from the online world. But when it comes to documents, this is where one needs to really pay attention. One of the most important travel documents is a visa. For many travellers, the visa process can be confusing, especially with terms like visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and e-visa. We are here to simplify this for you. All three differ significantly in terms of application process, convenience, and eligibility. Read on to know more.
What is Visa-Free travel ?Travel without a visa. This is exactly what this means, no hidden meaning here. A visa-free country allows travellers to enter without the need for a visa at all. No paperwork, no trip to the embassy, no visa interviews, no hassle.
For Indians, if you have a valid passport and, in some cases, proof of return tickets or funds, all you need to do is pack your bags and head for the airport. Visa-free travel is usually granted for a limited period, typically ranging from 30 to 90 days (if extension is allowed by the host country).
For Indian passport holders, countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Seychelles, Mauritius offer visa-free entry. As mentioned earlier, you only need to show a valid passport, return ticket and enough funds to support your travel/stay.

What is Visa-on-Arrival ?A visa-on-arrival (VoA) allows travellers to obtain their visa upon reaching the destination country’s airport, seaport, or land border. In case of spontaneous trips or short-term travel, this is pretty helpful. Unlike visa-free entry, VoA requires certain documents and procedures at the entry point. This includes filling out an application form, producing your passport, and paying the visa fee. In some cases, you might have to provide proof of accommodation or return tickets.
Why is this a good thing, you ask? With visa-on-arrival, travellers do not need to apply weeks in advance. It is important to note that the process may involve waiting in queues at the airport or border. In case of incomplete travel documents or unfortunately the immigration authorities are not satisfied with your documents, there is always a small risk of denial. Therefore, while you are making travel plans, it is always best to check the specific requirements of the destination country.
What is an E-Visa ?An e-visa is an electronic visa applied for online, approved before travel, and linked to the traveller’s passport digitally. Unlike a visa-on-arrival, which is issued at the border, with e-visa, travellers are required to submit an application on the country’s official portal, upload necessary documents, and pay the visa fee online. Once approved, travellers will receive a confirmation document. This document will have to be produced at immigration upon arrival. E-visas have become increasingly popular due to their convenience and efficiency.
The main advantage of an e-visa is that it eliminates the need to stand in long queues at the airport. However, travellers must apply in advance, usually several days before departure, and ensure all information is accurate. Any errors can lead to delays or denial at immigration.
