Supplementary vs. Compartment Exam: You may have heard of the term compartment exam. You may also have heard of supplementary exams. These exams are conducted by the CBSE and other state educational boards. This begs the question: are compartment exams and supplementary exams different? If they are the same, why are there two names? Let's understand how supplementary exams have become more common and the story behind them.

What's different about the two exams?

There's no difference between compartment exams and supplementary exams. The process is the same. Although the CBSE used to conduct compartment exams for the past few years, it now conducts supplementary exams. Overall, the CBSE has renamed the compartment exam as a supplementary exam.

Who can take the supplementary exam?

Following the new CBSE regulations, starting in 2023, all students in the "compartment" and "improvement of performance" categories will be appearing for a "supplementary examination" held annually after the main examination. This means that if a student was previously preparing for a compartment examination, the same examination will now be conducted under the name "supplementary." Both the work and process will remain the same.

Why was the change made?
The CBSE made this decision in light of the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020). According to the board, the name change will reduce the mental stress associated with the word "compartment" for students. The new name, "supplementary," will appear more positive and accessible to students.

When was the decision made?
This proposal was presented at the Examination Committee meeting held on December 2, 2022. Subsequently, it was approved by the Board's Governing Body on December 28, 2022. Consequently, from 2023, this examination will officially be called "supplementary examination."

Relief for students
According to experts, this change is an important step towards reducing student stress. Previously, the word "compartment" evoked feelings of failure for students and parents, but the term "supplementary" is more comfortable and positive. The new education policy emphasizes this approach by reducing pressure on students and providing them with better options.
