Yogurt has a special place in Indian food. Whether it is about digestion or cooling in summer, curd is considered to be the protector of health. But do you know that the curd that you are eating ‘beneficial bacteria’ every day, is not really providing any benefit to your body?

In recent years, the activity of probiotic bacteria in many types of packed yogurt and yogurt kept in the fridge in the fridge is eliminated. That is, you think that you are eating healthy ‘live bacteria’, while in reality you are eating only ‘dead bacteria’ yogurt – which does not give any benefit to the body.

What is the real advantage of yogurt?

Yogurt is considered beneficial for health because the lactic acid bacteria (LABs) present in it improve our intestinal health. These bacteria:

Help digestion

Reduce stomach gas and indigestion

Increase immunity

Protect from intestinal malfunction

But all these benefits are available only when there are ‘live’ i.e. living bacteria in curd.

Yogurt kept in the fridge can become ineffective

Many people keep the curd in the fridge for 4-5 days and believe that it is still fresh. But in fact, the beneficial bacteria present in yogurt can be passive or die due to prolonged cold temperatures or frequent temperature fluctuations.

Similarly, some packed yogurt or flavored yogurt found in the market also have very small number of probiotics or they are inactive. This means that you are eating only “yogurt -like substances”, not real nutrition.

How to identify real, beneficial yogurt?

Fresh yogurt at home is best.

The taste of curd should be mild sour – more sour or faded curd can be in the circle of suspicion.

The longer the shelf life of packed yogurt, the less alive bacteria will be.

When should you be careful?

If the curd starts releasing water or smells

Become very sour

Yogurt looked very thick or very thin

So it can be indicated that bacteria in yogurt are dead.

What to do?

Gather fresh yogurt at home every day.

Do not keep yogurt for more than 24 hours.

Keep yogurt in a cold place in summer, but do not keep it in too much cold.

Read the label while buying probiotic yogurt from the market.
