Instagram and WhatsApp: Until now, we were all confident that our chats were completely end-to-end encrypted and no one could access our private conversations.

Until now, we were all confident that our chats were completely end-to-end encrypted and no one could access our private conversations. But now the question arises: will those conversations remain completely secure when chatting with Meta AI? In fact, Meta has clarified that AI conversations and interactions on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger will be used to display advertisements. This means that you will see personalized content and ads based on your conversations.

Meta has announced in a blog post that starting December 16, 2025, all of its social media apps, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, will begin showing users content and advertisements based on their AI chats. This will include text as well as voice prompts. Meta says this change is being made to ensure users receive content and ads that they are most interested in.

The biggest concern is that users won't be able to opt out of this update completely. This means that if you're using Meta AI, your conversations will still be subject to ad targeting in some form. Of course, you'll have the option of using Ad Preferences and Feed Control Tools to block unwanted advertisers or control ads to some extent.

If you don't want Meta to use your chats for advertising, the most straightforward solution is to stop using Meta AI. Every detail, even a simple question, can now become part of data collection.

Meta has stated that starting October 7, 2025, users will be notified of this change via in-app notifications and emails. This update will be rolled out gradually in different countries and regions. Therefore, users will now have to carefully consider what they share with AI chatbots.

In the future, Instagram and WhatsApp users will receive more personalized content, but this will come at a cost to their privacy. It's up to you whether you choose convenience or security.
