NHAI will appoint a private entity for this DPR, which will conduct a detailed survey of the existing condition of the highway, traffic pressure, flyovers and underpasses etc. On the basis of this survey, a plan for construction of six lanes will be made. About two crore rupees will be spent on preparing the report. Before starting the highway construction, the concerned department will hold discussions with local public representatives and ministers, so that the project can be taken forward as per their suggestions.
Under the project, technical testing of all the flyovers and underpasses in the stretch from Meerut to Roorkee will be conducted. These will be redesigned with six lanes so that there is no problem of traffic jam in future. There is also a plan to eliminate the deadly cuts on the highway. Especially the demand for flyover on Bilaspur cut has been approved by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
At present, one flyover, three railway overbridges and seven underpasses exist in the Meerut area of the Delhi-Dehradun Highway. These include major flyovers like Baghpat Bypass, Kankarkheda, Modipuram, Daurala, Sakoti, Dadri and Bhangela. The underpass has names like Raipur-Nangli, Jansath, Bhopa bypass.
There are many dangerous cuts on the highway, which cause accidents. Prominent among them are Pinna Tiraha, Bagowali Square, Rathedi Cut, Pachenda Flyover, Rampur Tiraha, Mansoorpur Tiraha, Begrajpur Medical College, Devrana Hotel Cut, Jadauda Stand and Khatauli’s KFC Hotel Cut. Special attention will also be given to making these places safe.
It is noteworthy that in the year 2009, this highway was developed into four lanes, but due to increasing traffic pressure, its expansion has now become the need of the hour. The total distance from Delhi to Dehradun is approximately 250 kilometers. After construction of six lanes, travel will not only be faster and easier, but traffic jams and accidents will also reduce.
