Fans of the legendary Channel 4 series The Inbetweeners were overjoyed today following the announcement that the hit UK comedy will be making a triumphant return.

Featuring Simon Bird as Will, James Buckley as Jay, Joe Thomas as Simon and Blake Harrison as Neil, The Inbetweeners originally aired from 2008 to 2010 before the characters also returned for two films in 2011 and 2014.

Now, it appears the show will be getting a new lease of life thanks to creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley signing a fresh deal with production powerhouse Banijay UK, reports The Mirror.

Following the news of a comeback, fans have been curious about what the cast have been up to since the show concluded.

So, let's delve into the life of Will McKenzie star Simon Bird away from the popular E4 sitcom.

Simon Bird was raised as the third of four children in Guildford, Surrey, where he attended the Royal Grammar School.

He went on to study English at Cambridge University, where he became president of the Footlights and met Joe Thomas.

The duo were cast in The Inbetweeners after performing together in Edinburgh and Simon won the British comedy award for best newcomer in 2008.

Simon Bird has been wedded to his wife Lisa Owens since 2012, with the couple first meeting while performing a comedy sketch together at Cambridge University.

The Inbetweeners actor popped the question to Lisa during a romantic getaway to Paris back in 2011.

Lisa works as a screenwriter, boasting credits that include her 2017 publication Not Working.

She has previously joined forces with her spouse professionally, with Simon having transformed her graphic novel into the 2019 cinema release Days Of The Bagnold Summer.

Lisa and Simon reside in London alongside their two offspring and tend to maintain considerable privacy regarding their young household.

Nevertheless, Simon offered an amusing domestic revelation last year when he revealed to The Times that they had implemented a 'travel prohibition' after recognising the strain of holidaying with small children.

After one particularly draining expedition to California, he confessed: "After that my wife and I decided to impose a travel ban, which lasted a few years - it was honestly the best decision we've ever made."

He has verified the prohibition has 'since been lifted' now that the youngsters have matured and they can 'enjoy holidays again'.

Beyond his legendary portrayal of Will McKenzie in The Inbetweeners, Simon Bird is equally recognised by numerous Channel 4 viewers for his depiction of Adam Goodman in the cherished sitcom Friday Night Dinner.

The comedy aired between 2011 and 2020 and featured Tamsin Greig, Tom Rosenthal, Mark Heap and the late Paul Ritter.

Simon's additional work encompasses You, Me and Him, Everyone Else Burns and Sandylands.

Reports have also emerged suggesting Simon is poised to become part of the ensemble for a forthcoming Star Wars production. Hollywood heavyweight Ryan Gosling is set to star in the new film Star Wars: Starfighter, alongside Amy Adams, Matt Smith and Mia Goth.

In a joint statement, creators of The Inbetweeners, Iain Morris and Damon Beesley expressed their excitement: "It's incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends)."

This suggests that Simon Bird will reprise his role as Will, joining his fellow main cast members Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison.

Patrick Holland, the chief executive at Banijay, also shed some light on the show's return, telling The Sun he was "delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of The Inbetweeners".

"They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audiences old and new," he stated, before adding that the agreement "unlocks the rights and potential to bring The Inbetweeners back for new audiences across a range of platforms, including film, TV and stage".

The Inbetweeners is available to stream now on channel4.com.
