Halifax has explained its cash access rules after a question from a customer. The customer asked over social media about what the bank's policies are with regard to withdrawing cash over the counter and if there is a "set amount" regarding how much you can take out.

In response, the bank said: "The limit per day is £2,500 without notice. Anything over that needs to be pre-ordered with a minimum of 48 hours."

Guidance on the Halifax website explains: "You can withdraw up to £800 a day from a cash machine. The daily maximum cash withdrawal over the branch counter is £2,500, unless you have pre-ordered a higher amount.

"If you wish to withdraw more than £2,500 in cash, you will need to give your branch advance notice. When making large withdrawals, you will need to prove your identity."

It is free to make withdrawals at a Halifax cash machine although the bank advises that there may be charges when using another cash machine. The group's website explains: "Halifax won't charge you, but the cash machine owner might. Check for charges first."

Halifax is set to close three branches in November 2025. This includes:

  • Bolton, November 25
  • Hexham, November 11
  • Wickford, November 10.

If a branch is closing in your area, it is worth checking if a banking hub is opening or has opened nearby. These are central hubs run by the Post Office, where you can access banking services for many of the big name banks such as Halifax.

You can use banking hubs to take out cash and make deposits. The Post Office also offers certain basic bank services, such as taking out cash at the counter or at cash machine, depositing cash or checking your account balance.
