In a significant advancement for students aiming for careers in the medical field, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced the approval of 10,650 additional MBBS seats. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment made on Independence Day 2024, enhancing opportunities for candidates applying this year and in the upcoming admission cycle.

The government has set an ambitious target to create a total of 75,000 new medical seats over the next five years. Let's take a closer look at the current seat availability.

41 New Medical Colleges Established

According to NMC Chief Dr. Abhijat Sheth, the approval of 41 new medical colleges has increased the total number of medical institutions in India to 816. Out of 170 applications for expanding undergraduate (UG) seats, 10,650 new MBBS seats have been sanctioned, which includes requests from 41 government and 129 private institutions. Consequently, the total MBBS seats available for the 2024-25 academic year will rise to 137,600, including those at Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

Increase in PG Seats by 5,000

The NMC has also received a substantial number of applications for postgraduate (PG) courses, with over 3,500 new and renewal requests submitted. The Commission anticipates adding around 5,000 new PG seats, which will elevate the total PG seat count to 67,000. This year, the overall expansion will include approximately 15,000 new seats across both UG and PG programs.

The NMC has assured that the approval and consultation processes will be completed promptly. Additionally, the application portal for the 2025-26 academic year is set to open in early November.

Boosting Medical Research

Dr. Sheth also highlighted that all appeals regarding decisions from the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) have been resolved without court involvement this time. The NMC is actively working to integrate clinical research into the medical curriculum, with plans for collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

This initiative aims to enhance the quality of medical education and strengthen healthcare services, addressing the increasing demand for doctors in the country and providing a new direction for the health sector.
