Chennai: As the Northeast Monsoon continues to intensify over Tamil Nadu, district administrations have begun declaring holidays for educational institutions to ensure public safety. In the latest development, Dharmapuri District Collector Satheesh has ordered a holiday for all schools and anganwadis in the district tomorrow due to the forecast of heavy rainfall. To compensate for the disruption, October 25 has been declared a working day.
The decision comes as several areas in Dharmapuri district have reported water entering residential properties, prompting authorities to expedite rescue and relief operations. The proactive closure underscores the severity of the ongoing weather situation affecting large parts of the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed forecast indicating a prolonged spell of heavy rainfall across numerous districts. Today, the warning is particularly severe for Ranipet and Tiruvallur, where heavy to very heavy rain is expected at a few places, with isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall.
A broader alert for heavy to very heavy rain at a few places has been issued for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem. Additionally, heavy rain is likely in Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Erode, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari districts, and Puducherry.

The weather agency’s outlook confirms that the active monsoon conditions will persist through the coming days, affecting a consistent group of districts. For tomorrow, October 23, heavy rain is likely in Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Chennai, and Tiruvallur districts.
On October 24, the alert shifts to Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts, along with Puducherry. Looking further ahead, the IMD has forecast heavy rain for October 26 and 27 in a wide zone including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Ranipet, Villupuram districts, and Puducherry.
