Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s name is taken with utmost respect in the Indian music world. He was not only the younger brother of legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, but also an amazing composer, singer and music director.

His specialty was that he left his mark in many types of music. From classical music to folk songs, pop, music for Hindi and Marathi films, tunes for Doordarshan dramas and bhajan-ghazal albums, his compositions in every field settled in the hearts of people. This is the reason why he is considered a multidimensional artist in Indian music.

Hridaynath Mangeshkar was born on 26 October 1937 in Maharashtra. His father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a renowned classical singer and theater actor. Hridaynath had a deep love for music since childhood. He had a leg infection in his childhood, due to which he was not able to participate in sports.

At this time he increased his interest in studies and stories. He read religious and mythological books like Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Dnyaneshwari and was also interested in saint poems like Mirabai, Kabir, and Surdas while growing up.

His first big break in music came in 1955, when he wrote a Surdas verse ‘Nis Din Barsaat Nain Hamare’ for HMV and it was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song became instantly popular and brought Hridaynath Mangeshkar recognition as a composer. In the same year, he also directed music for the Marathi film ‘Akashganga’. In this way his career gradually started progressing.

The biggest specialty of Hridaynath Mangeshkar was that he was an expert in almost all genres of music. He gained deep knowledge in classical music, won the hearts of the people in folk songs, and also showed his art in pop music.

He composed many songs for Hindi and Marathi films. He composed the music of many musical dramas for Doordarshan channel. Apart from this, he also added a new dimension to Indian classical music by making albums on Mira Bhajans and Ghazals of Ghalib. His albums and compositions are extremely popular among music lovers even today.

Hridaynath Mangeshkar also received many awards for his work. He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1990. In 2006 she was honored with the Lata Mangeshkar Award by the state of Maharashtra.

In 2009 he was awarded the Padma Shri and in 2016 he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship Award. He was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. In addition, he also received seven Maharashtra State Awards for Best Singer and Musician.
