Nearly three years after the historic renaming of Aurangabad city in Maharashtra, the Central Railway has officially changed the name of Aurangabad Railway Station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Railway Station.

According to an official release issued on Saturday, the new station code will be “CPSN.” The station falls under the Nanded Division of the South Central Railway, and the renaming aligns with the government’s broader initiative to reflect the region’s Maratha heritage.

The BJP-led Mahayuti government had earlier issued a gazette notification on October 15 to formalize the change. This step comes as part of a continued effort to recognize and celebrate historical figures from Maharashtra’s past.

The city, originally named after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, was renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2022 by the then Eknath Shinde government. The new name honors Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the second ruler of the Maratha Empire.

Opened in 1900 during the reign of the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the railway station has long been a key junction for travelers in the Marathwada region.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is also known as a major tourist hub, surrounded by historic and cultural landmarks such as the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
