Björn Andrésen, best known for his breakout role as 14-year-old Tadzio in Death in Venice, has died at the age of 70.

The cause of death has not been given, but his daughter Robine Román paid tribute to her father in a touching post.

On Instagram, the Swedish caption's English translation reads: "Be still. No more harsh words. There's not much of me left. Don't cry over me.

"Here, there is no longer any fire to put out. I no longer have a sense of what is me and what is not me."

The star from Stockholm was also known for his role in the 2019 folk horror film Midsommar.

His childhood was a challenging one, as his mother took her own life when he was just 10 years old, and his father has never been identified.

He was brought up by his maternal grandparents and his grandmother encouraged him to pursue acting and modelling.

He gained international recognition for his role in Death in Venice and film historian Lawrence J. Quirk said some shots of the young star "could be extracted from the frame and hung on the walls of the Louvre or the Vatican".

Following the Cannes Film Festival a year after the premiere of Death in Venice, Andrésen was hailed in international headlines as "the most beautiful boy in the world".

Yet Andrésen did not want to take on roles he felt would play off his good looks.

Instead, he spent a long time in Japan, becoming a cultural idol and fashion model.

As well as being an actor, he was a professional musician and performed with the Sven Erics dance band.

In 2021 he was the subject of The Most Beautiful Boy in the World, a documentary detailing his experiences after Death in Venice.

In the same year, he starred in Agatha Christie's Hjerson as Oscar, marking one of his final roles.

The father-of-two, who was married to poet Susanna Roman, lost his son Elvin who died from sudden infant death syndrome at just nine months old.

He fell into deep depression following his son's death, but said he believed he would meet him again "in the afterlife".
