Chennai: In response to the impending landfall of Cyclone Montha, the Chennai District Collector, Ms. Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, has officially declared a holiday for all schools within the Chennai district tomorrow, Tuesday, October 28. The decision comes as a precautionary measure following heavy rainfall warnings issued for Chennai and several neighbouring districts.

Chennai School Holiday: Official Declaration by District Collector

The city has been experiencing continuous rainfall since this morning due to the influence of the cyclonic system forming over the Bay of Bengal. With Cyclone Montha expected to make landfall tomorrow, the district administration has prioritized public safety, particularly for school children. The holiday applies specifically to schools, and the announcement was made after assessing the weather alerts from the meteorological department.

Similarly, rain holiday declared for all schools in Tiruvallur district as well tomorrow, October 28, Tuesday.

Cyclone Montha Update: Heavy Rain and Sharp Rise in Chennai’s Reservoir Levels

The Northeast Monsoon has intensified over Tamil Nadu, bringing significant rainfall to Chennai and its neighboring districts. This sustained downpour has led to a sharp and welcome rise in the water levels of key reservoirs that supply drinking water to the city, including Chembarambakkam and Puzhal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the region has recorded more rainfall than normal for this period. The intensified monsoon conditions are being fueled by Cyclone Mondha, which is currently active over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to make landfall tomorrow.

Chennai Weather: Very Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Five Districts Including Chennai

With Cyclone Mondha approaching the coast, the IMD has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds for five districts: Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet. The alert is in effect as the cyclonic system is poised to influence weather patterns significantly, bringing intense precipitation to these areas.

The impact of the approaching storm is already being felt, with rains lashing several districts, including Chennai, since Monday. The consistent rainfall has provided a major boost to the city’s water security, but authorities remain on high alert for potential flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
