Just as KYC has to be done repeatedly to keep the bank account safe, in the same way it has now become necessary to complete KYV to verify the Fastag of your vehicle. All vehicle owners in the country will have to follow these rules, especially those who are using Fastag. If KYV is not done then Fastag will not work and full cash will have to be paid at toll.

This rule has become mandatory from 31 October 2024. In this, all Fastag users will have to upload the photo of their vehicle and Registration Certificate (RC), so that it can be confirmed that the Fastag is linked to the correct vehicle.

And yes, this verification will have to be done again every three years. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has informed the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) about this. NPCI itself handles the work of toll deduction through Fastag. This step has been taken to stop fraud in Fastag.

In a Times of India report, a government official said that some people keep Fastag in their pockets or purses instead of pasting it on the windshield of the vehicle, due to which misuse is increasing. Another officer said, “Many times car owners pay less toll by attaching the tag to the truck. KYV will stop such irregularities.”

According to a source, the purpose of starting Fastag was digital toll collection, but the banks were a little careless while issuing it. Now the system will be made clean with KYV.

KYV with Fastag has now become mandatory

Question – What was the need for the Road Transport Ministry to implement KYV? The main reason is to prevent misuse of Fastag. The ministry will now ensure that Fastag is installed on the right category of vehicle and remains active. This is also important because Multilane Free Flow (MLFF) system is about to come, in which vehicles will pass without stopping or slowing down, there will be no barriers.

Apart from this, there were complaints that people were putting Fastag of one vehicle on another, the tag in the name of the old owner would remain active even after the vehicle was sold. Fake or duplicate tags were circulating in the market. Many tags were registered in the wrong category, such as a car tag on a truck. To stop all this, NHAI started KYV. After KYV, there will be clear information behind each tag – on which vehicle, which owner’s name and which bank it is linked to.

The government plans to bring all highways with four or more lanes into MLFF in the next 4-5 years. Therefore ‘one vehicle, one tag’ is very important.

Question – Will all Fastag people have to do KYV? Yes, as per NPCI notification, all Fastags will have to follow KYV. In this, it is necessary to link Fastag with the specific vehicle number. Banks will have to follow the ‘one vehicle-one tag’ rule. All tags older than five years will have to be changed.

Question – What will Fastag people have to do? Upload the RC of the vehicle, take a photo of the front of the vehicle showing Fastag and number plate. Also upload a side image showing the tag and axle. Without valid KYV, Fastag will be automatically deactivated.

Question – Are vehicles being stopped at toll for not doing KYV? Yes, some vehicles are being stopped at toll and being told that Fastag is not working due to lack of KYV. But most of the users complain that the upload is not happening properly. Complaints are coming on this.

Question – Is KYV necessary for all Fastag holders? Yes, it is mandatory for all vehicle owners, whether Fastag is from a bank or payment app. NHAI has said that the tags of those who do not do KYV will be blocked or deactivated. There will be no payment through Fastag at toll, there will be hassle of cash.

Question – What documents are required in KYV? Usually four things – RC of the vehicle (containing number and owner name), ID proof like Aadhaar, PAN or passport, Fastag number or ID, and in some cases selfie. If the car is 5 years old or bought second hand then definitely get KYV done.

Question – How to complete the KYV process? Login to your FASTag provider’s website or app, like ICICI FASTag, HDFC FASTag, Paytm FASTag, Amazon Pay FASTag etc. Go to ‘Update KYV’ or ‘Know Your Vehicle’ section. Enter vehicle number and Fastag ID. Upload RC, ID proof etc. Submit, verify OTP or email. In a few days Fastag will appear ‘Active and Verified’. If everything is correct then the tag will run normally.

Question – Will Fastag work without KYV? No, due to the new rules of NHAI, unverified or partially verified tags will be rejected at toll. If payment fails even if there is balance, cash will have to be paid.

Question – What are the benefits of KYV? Wrong use of Fastag will stop. One tag will work only on that vehicle. Easy tracing after theft or sale. The new owner will get a new tag. Transparency in toll will increase. Wrong category tag error fixed. Fraud and duplicates will reduce. Users will get better tracking.

Question – Is KYV free or will it cost? Right now it is completely free, no charges.

Question – KYV once again, when again? Once the KYV is permanent, unless the vehicle is sold or the tag is transferred. If the ownership or RC number changes, it will have to be done again for a new vehicle.
