CPI(M) leader PV Bhaskaran, who had once dismissed the film “The Kerala Story” as “organized propaganda”, is now himself facing serious allegations for stopping his daughter from marrying a Muslim youth. His 35-year-old daughter PV Sangeetha (Sangeetha) has revealed that he imprisoned her at home and tortured her mentally and physically after she expressed her desire to marry a Muslim youth.

According to Sangeeta, her father Bhaskaran has threatened, “You can talk about communism outside, but it has no place at home. If you don’t agree, I will kill you. I know ways to get out of jail.”

Bhaskaran is a member of the Uduma area committee of Kasaragod, but Sangeeta has accused him of trying to grab her property and instigating her to commit suicide. Sangeeta, who was paralyzed from the waist down in a road accident in September 2023, says that she is not even getting proper treatment. “I was repeatedly told to go and die. I was hit on the head, and told that I would not be able to walk for the rest of my life.”

Sangeeta told that her father and brother also usurped the alimony and gold received after the divorce. When she filed habeas corpus in the court, the police dismissed it as just a case of “living with parents”. He also sought help from the District Collector and SP, but no hearing took place.

On the other hand, Bhaskaran denied the allegations and said that Sangeeta’s boyfriend Rashid is already married and his only intention is to take over the property, as usually happens in cases of love jihad. Police records have also confirmed that Rashid is married and the complaint was lodged by his wife.

It is noteworthy that the same Bhaskaran had described “The Kerala Story” as “communal propaganda”. The Left leadership, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, had dismissed the “love jihad” cases as an RSS-BJP conspiracy. But the truth is that in many cases girls from Kerala have reached ISIS, like the case of Nimisha alias Fathima.

This dual policy of leftist leaders has now come to the fore. The same people who talk about “secularism” and “women’s freedom” in public are guarding the choice of daughters in their own homes, while the propagation of this truth by Hindu organizations is accused of communal intolerance. This case is not just about a family, but is a mirror of the mentality of the leftist society of Kerala, where ideology is limited only to the stage and not within the four walls of the house.

Left politics in Kerala has been claiming “liberalism” and “progressiveness” for years, but when the matter reaches home, the same leaders become symbols of patriarchal violence and abuse of power. Bhaskaran’s case shows that the moral cover of the Left has now completely fallen.
