The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented new rules regarding FASTag, which is used for toll payment across the country. Under these new provisions that came into effect from November 1, 2025, now for all Fastag users KYC (Know Your Customer) It has been made mandatory to complete the process. If a vehicle owner does not complete his KYC process within the stipulated time limit, his Fastag will be deactivated.
NHAI has taken this step with the aim of bringing transparency in digital transactions and eliminating fake accounts. In recent months, several complaints to Fastag had come to light, including cases like use of multiple Fastags on the same vehicle, wrong account linking and unauthorized transactions. In such a situation, the authority has decided to tighten the KYC process to prevent these problems.
According to NHAI officials, the new system will ensure that every Fastag is linked to the same vehicle and the same user. Banks issuing Fastag will now have to ensure that they collect complete KYC information from the customer, which includes information like Aadhaar, PAN card, vehicle registration certificate and mobile number.
NHAI has clearly said that the Fastag of users who do not complete the KYC process will soon be blocked. This can cause problems for people who have been using the old tag for a long time but have never updated their information.
Under this new arrangement, NHAI has “One Vehicle One FASTag“It has also been said that the policy will be strictly implemented. Under this, no more than one Fastag can be installed on any vehicle. Many users use Fastags of different banks, due to which cases of duplicate entry and fraud were increasing. The new policy will stop these.
Banks have been instructed to inform all their customers to update KYC. For this, they have been asked to send alerts through SMS, email and notification. If the customer does not update in time, the bank will have the right to deactivate Fastag.
Major fastag issuing agencies like Paytm Payments Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank has started online KYC portal for its customers. Users can easily upload their KYC details from their mobile or computer. For this only Aadhaar number and vehicle RC will be required.
According to experts, the biggest advantage of this new policy will be that the Fastag system will become more secure and transparent. Also, disputes arising from fake tags and wrong accounts will reduce. This will also reduce long queues at toll plazas as now each tag will be identified with only one vehicle.
NHAI has also said that after completing the KYC of Fastag, users will not have to pay any additional fee. This entire process is free. However, if a tag is blocked due to incorrect information, the user will have to contact the concerned bank to reactivate it.
According to statistics, till now in India More than 7.5 crore Fastags are issued. Of these, about 15 percent are tags whose KYC information is incomplete. NHAI wants all users to update their information by December 2025 so that any kind of inconvenience can be avoided.
Fastag was launched in 2016 with the aim of making toll payment digital and cashless in the country. Over time this system became extremely popular, but with it the cases of fraud and misuse also increased. Now through new rules, NHAI is taking steps towards making this system more secure.
It is important for Fastag users to complete their KYC process as soon as possible. By doing this, not only will the transactions be secure but it will also avoid any problems during the journey.
