Global Peace Prayer Festival: Bhutan has begun the Global Peace Prayer Festival, a historic spiritual event that will bring together Buddhist leaders, practitioners, and peace activists from all around the globe from November 4 to 17.

The celebration, which takes place in Thimphu, includes public blessings, the Kalachakra Empowerment, the collective recitation of Bazaguru, a non-sectarian Global Peace Prayer, and holy rites. It seeks to bring together Buddhist practitioners and spiritual leaders from all traditions in order to promote harmony, compassion, and peace in a world that is becoming more and more divided and riven by conflict.

Renowned lamas, academics, and practitioners from all branches of Buddhism—Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana—come together for the 13-day celebration, which is organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan. The goal of the meeting is to co-create a future based on happiness and peace by using the transforming power of mindfulness and loving-kindness.

The Central Monastic Body at Kuenselphodrang performed the holy ceremony of Jabzhi Dhoechog to kick off the Global Peace Prayer Festival. The uncommon ceremony, which is carried out on a large scale, heals, purifies, and rids the body, speech, and mind of bad karma by combining serene sacrifices with wrathful protection.

Representatives from all Vajrayana Buddhist sects and other Buddhist traditions will offer prayers for global peace at a Global Peace Prayer at Changlimithang Ground as the festivities continue. During lectures and empowerments, simultaneous translations will be offered for the prayers, which will be held in English, Tibetan, and Dzongkha.

Public blessings will also be given by distinguished lamas, giving followers access to spiritual grace and direction. The Bazaguru mantra, a communal act of devotion and awareness that brings people from all walks of life together in a common desire for peace, will then be recited in mass.

Under the direction of His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the Kalachakra Initiation and Empowerment will provide deep insights into the inherent Buddha nature found in all creatures and the holy relationship between the person and the cosmos. As the event goes on, a comprehensive itinerary including participation from lamas in Bhutan and outside will be made public.

The Bhikkhuni Ordination, also called the Gelongma Ordination, will take place during the festival at the Bhutan Nuns Foundation’s Training and Resource Center in Tshalumaphey, Thimphu. His Holiness the Je Khenpo will perform the ordination of around 250 Buddhist nuns from all over the globe. For Mahayana Buddhist nuns, this is the second such ordination that the Bhutan Nuns Foundation has arranged.

The festival will include academic talks on the Kalachakra tradition and an exhibition of Kalachakra art and artifacts in addition to the major events. These gatherings demonstrate Bhutan’s unwavering dedication to conserving and introducing the world to the spiritual legacy of Buddhism.
