Ladyfinger is such a vegetable which is liked very much by both children and adults. Ladyfinger is rich in nutrition and very beneficial for health, but wrong combination of it with some food items can have negative effects on the body. Both Ayurveda and modern nutrition believe that the “food compatibility (Viruddha Ahara)” of every food should be kept in mind. Today we will tell you which things should not be consumed with ladyfinger and why.

Bhindi with curd or buttermilk

Reason: Ladyfinger is cold in nature and curd is also cold in nature. Consuming both together can cause mucus, cold, cough and digestive problems. From Ayurvedic point of view – this is an “anti-diet” – it can increase Kapha dosha in the body.

Fish or Egg with Ladyfinger

Reason: Fish/egg are hot natured protein sources whereas ladyfinger is a cold natured vegetable. This combination may cause skin problems like allergy, itching, or rash. From a scientific point of view – consumption of such foods together can have an adverse effect on the digestive enzymes.

Okra with citrus fruits or lemon

Reason: Mucilage (sticky substance) present in lady’s finger can react with sour elements, which can cause stomach ache, gas or acidity.

Very spicy or fried foods with okra

Reason: Okra contains both fiber and mucilage which keeps the stomach calm. If it is made too spicy then this quality can have the opposite effect – indigestion, gas and heaviness can occur.

Correct ways to eat ladyfinger

  1. It is best to eat it by lightly roasting or steaming it.
  2. If desired, add some cumin, turmeric and asafoetida – this will help in improving digestion.
  3. It is better to take it at lunch than at night.
