Shimla:
Himachal Pradesh is poised to enhance its air travel options as flight services between Delhi-Shimla and Shimla-Dharamshala are anticipated to restart later this month, thanks to the UDAN regional connectivity initiative.
The state administration is in the process of renewing its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Alliance Air, which previously provided regular flights connecting these key locations. This move aims to facilitate easier travel for tourists and bolster inter-district connectivity within the mountainous region.
Renewal of Alliance Air Agreement in Progress
A meeting led by Devesh Kumar, the Secretary of Tourism and Civil Aviation, took place at the state secretariat to discuss the necessary steps for reinstating the flight services. Representatives from Alliance Air, along with officials from the Directorate of Tourism and the Civil Aviation Department, were present for the discussions.
Tourism officials indicated that the MoU with Alliance Air, which lapsed in September, is being extended for an additional three years. Once finalized, 48-seater ATR-42/600 aircraft will operate daily flights between Delhi, Shimla, and Dharamshala.
At present, the Delhi-Shimla route accommodates 23 passengers flying from Shimla to Delhi and 26 passengers on the return trip. The state’s tourism promotion plan will continue to offer subsidies for certain seats.
Flight Services Halted Since November 1
Alliance Air had previously halted its operations on November 1 due to the expiration of its agreement with the state government. The airline has now proposed to resume services following the MoU renewal.
Vivek Bhatia, the Director of Tourism and Civil Aviation, stated, “The MoU signing with Alliance Air is nearing completion. We expect both Delhi-Shimla and Shimla-Dharamshala flights to recommence this month.”
Chief Minister to Discuss UDAN Expansion with Central Authorities
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is likely to address the extension of the UDAN scheme and state-level air connectivity subsidies with Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu soon, as confirmed by officials. The Chief Minister may also seek additional central support to ensure the operational viability of flights in hilly areas, which are often impacted by adverse weather and low passenger numbers.
The revival of these flights is expected to greatly benefit both locals and visitors, offering a faster connection between Himachal's prominent destinations—Shimla and Dharamshala—and restoring regular air travel from Delhi.
Officials noted that the state government is eager to ensure ongoing air connectivity through Alliance Air, especially since Jubbarhatti Airport near Shimla frequently encounters weather-related disruptions. The renewed service will be managed with necessary safety measures and scheduling adjustments.
