Now there is good news for the passengers traveling by train. Google has introduced a new feature that will help passengers know where their train has reached — even without an internet connection. This facility is being considered as a big step towards making the travel experience more convenient for Indian Railways passengers.

Google has added this new update to its ‘Google Maps’ app, through which the live location of the train can now be tracked even in offline mode. This feature is currently in the testing phase in some select countries including India. Google said that this technology works with the help of route data and GPS signals already downloaded in the phone. That is, even if your internet connection goes down, the app will still tell you which station the train is ahead or behind and at what distance is the next station.

The biggest feature of this feature is that it will not require any additional app. Passengers just need to go to the Google Maps app and select the “Transit” or “Train Journey” option. After this the app will save the route of the train selected by you offline. As soon as the train journey starts, the app will continuously update the train status with the help of GPS.

Google claims that this feature will not only give accurate time information to the passengers, but will also save them from unnecessary waiting at crowded stations. The company says that it is working with Indian Railways and local transit agencies to further improve this facility.

Technical experts believe that this feature will prove to be very useful for those travelers who often face network problems in rural or hilly areas. Now passengers will be able to know whether their train is on time or not, even without internet.

With this new feature, Google Maps is once again proving that smart technology is not limited to cities only, but has now reached the railway tracks of India.
