Guwahati, Nov 14: The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, convened on Thursday to endorse a range of significant policy and infrastructure initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity, promoting sports, protecting riverbanks, and nurturing family values among government employees.

In a major advancement for road infrastructure, the Cabinet has approved the launch of Asom Mala 3.0, allocating Rs 3,217 crore for the project. This initiative plans to develop a high-speed transport corridor covering 883 km of roads and constructing 36 new bridges across 34 districts.

The goal of this project is to bolster regional connectivity, boost economic activities, and improve links between rural and urban areas.

Additionally, the Cabinet has granted administrative approval for Rs 765 crore to redevelop the historic R.G. Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati.

This redevelopment aims to convert the venue into a state-of-the-art, multi-sport facility, which will include a FIFA Category 2 stadium with a seating capacity of 25,000.

This initiative aligns with the government’s vision to establish Assam as a leading sports hub and a preferred venue for both national and international events.

The Cabinet also approved a Community-Led Riverbank Protection Policy to tackle ongoing issues of erosion and flooding. This policy encourages voluntary land relinquishment for embankment and protection efforts, facilitating quicker implementation and greater involvement from local communities.

Moreover, the Cabinet has authorized the distribution of both hard and soft copies of the report from the Commission of Enquiry on Assam Disturbances, 1983 (Tribhuvan Prasad Tewary Commission) during the forthcoming session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

To foster family connections and cultural values, the Cabinet has approved special casual leave for state government employees under the Matri Pitri Vandana initiative.

Employees can take this leave either from July 9 to 12 or from July 23 to 26, 2026, encouraging them to spend meaningful time with their parents and elders. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that these Cabinet decisions demonstrate the state government’s dedication to comprehensive development, modernizing infrastructure, and reinforcing community and family bonds.
