Sanju Samson's recent transfer to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stands out as one of the most pivotal trades in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), concluding his long-standing relationship with Rajasthan Royals (RR). The Royals announced this change following a disappointing 2025 season, which marked their worst performance in nearly two decades, leaving both the player and the franchise feeling emotionally drained.

Samson, who became part of RR in 2013, was traded to CSK for a sum of ₹18 crore. In exchange, RR acquired Ravindra Jadeja for ₹14 crore and Sam Curran for ₹2.40 crore. This decision came after a heartfelt discussion between Samson and RR owner Manoj Badale, where Samson expressed his wish for a new beginning after years of dedication.

Badale shared that Samson first mentioned his desire to leave during a meeting in Kolkata towards the end of the 2025 season. "He was emotionally drained. Sanju has dedicated nearly 14 years to RR, and after our worst season, he felt it was time to seek new opportunities," Badale stated in a video message. He commended Samson's sincerity and dedication, emphasizing that his contributions extended beyond mere runs and sixes.

Throughout his time with RR, Sanju Samson accumulated 4,027 runs, with his peak performance occurring in 2024 when he scored 531 runs. He captained the team starting in 2021, leading them to the finals in 2022, where they faced defeat against Gujarat Titans. However, RR struggled to achieve playoff success in recent years, finishing fifth in 2023, exiting in Qualifier 2 in 2024, and landing in ninth place in 2025.

The Rajasthan Royals have undertaken a significant restructuring of their squad. Players retained include Dhruv Jurel, Jofra Archer, Kwena Maphaka, Lhuan-Dre Pretorious, Nandre Burger, Riyan Parag, Sandeep Sharma, Shimron Hetmyer, Shubham Dubey, Tushar Deshpande, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Yashaswi Jaiswal, and Yudhvir Charak. Jadeja and Curran will now join this core group following the trade.

On the other hand, RR has released several players, including Akash Madhwal, Ashok Sharma, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kumar Kartikeya, Kunal Rathore, Maheesh Theekshana, and Wanindu Hasaranga. Additionally, Donovan Ferreira has also been traded out.
