News India Live, Digital Desk: Anurag Kashyap is one of those Bollywood directors who is known for his outspoken opinions and different types of films. A special audience always waits for his films. But recently, when his new film ‘Nishanchi 2’ was released directly on OTT instead of theatres, the question arose in the minds of many people that why did this happen?

When Anurag Kashyap himself was asked the answer to this question, as always, he presented the simple and bitter truth without any pretense. He has not blamed anyone else but directly the audience as the reason for his film coming on OTT.

“If the audience had come to the theatre…”

Anurag Kashyap clearly said that if the audience had gone to theaters to watch his previous films, then today the producers would have had the courage to release ‘Nishanchi 2’ on the big screen. He said, “If the audience had come to the theaters and the producer had faith that people would buy tickets and come to watch the film, then this film would also have come to the theaters.”

His signal was clear. Nowadays, the audience appreciates good and different films, but does not bother to leave home and go to the theater to watch them. They wait for the film to be released on OTT in a few weeks, and they will watch it from the comfort of their homes.

Money is most important for a producer

Anurag also explained the economics of making a film. He said that any producer invests crores of rupees and makes a film so that he can earn his money back. When they see that audiences are not coming to theaters for a particular type of film, then the safest route left for them is OTT. OTT platforms pay a good lump sum amount for the film, which eliminates the risk of loss for the producer.

The pain of the big screen is in the heart

Anurag Kashyap also admitted that as a filmmaker, he makes each of his films only for the big screen experience. He gave the example of his previous film ‘Kennedy’, which got a standing ovation at the world’s biggest stage like Cannes Film Festival, but could not find buyers to release it in theaters in India.

This is a new reality of Hindi cinema, where the changing habits of the audience have decided which film will make a splash on the big screen and which one will quietly get lost on OTT.
