An "ambitious" fresh Stargate series is heading our way, with its newly appointed creator pledging something "extraordinary".

Reports first emerged three years ago that Amazon was keen to broaden the Stargate universe following its acquisition of MGM Studios, and now it's been officially confirmed that a brand new sci-fi programme is in development.

Storyline specifics for the forthcoming series remain tightly guarded, though it's understood that Martin Gero will take the helm as showrunner, writer and executive producer.

Gero is most recognised for developing NBC drama Blindspot starring Thor actress Jaimie Alexander, which ran for five seasons.

He also masterminded the limited series Keep Breathing, The CW's Kung Fu and the NBC revival of Quantum Leap featuring Caitlin Bassett and Top Gun: Maverick's Raymond Lee.

Devoted Stargate enthusiast Gero remarked: "Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis.

"I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television - it's written into my DNA.

"I'm beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase.

"For those who've kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith - this one's for you.

"And for those that are new to our world - I promise you're in for something extraordinary."

Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios Nick Pepper declared: "In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin [Gero], Tory [Tunnell], and Joby [Harold], we're honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience."

He continued by stating it was "one that honors the series' rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future".

Stargate first burst onto screens with the 1994 film featuring James Spader and Kurt Russell before making its triumphant return as the smash-hit series Stargate SG-1 which dominated television for 10 seasons.

The spin-off Stargate Atlantis subsequently graced screens for four years from 2004, succeeded by two additional Stargate films and three further programmes, including Stargate Origins which premiered in 2018.
