JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar Chief Minister for a record 10th time on Thursday.

Along with Kumar, 26 legislators took oaths as ministers.

As the CM, Kumar will earn a salary of ₹2.5 lakh, including housing, office, security, and other legislator-related facilities.

The state ranks joint fifth in India in terms of legislative salaries with Karnataka, according to Navbharat Times (NBT).


Breakdown of Bihar MLA's salary and allowances
Salary details


The basic monthly salary for a Bihar MLA is ₹50,000. This is supplemented by a constituency allowance of ₹55,000, a personal assistant allowance of ₹40,000 and a stationery allowance of ₹15,000.

Members also get an extra ₹3,000 per day during Assembly sessions or committee meetings, which adds significantly to their monthly income.

Apart from their salary, Bihar legislators also enjoy a host of facilities that differ widely across Indian states.

They are given annual travel coupons worth ₹4 lakh for air and rail travel, usable by family members too.

To ensure mobility in their constituencies, they can avail a vehicle loan of up to ₹25 lakh at concessional rates.

Bihar legislators are also provided with government accommodation in Patna and free medical treatment for themselves and their families in recognized hospitals.

Electricity, water, and telephone bills are heavily subsidized.

After completing a five-year term, an MLA is given a monthly pension of ₹45,000 by the Bihar government. This ensures post-retirement financial security for them.

Across India, Telangana has the highest MLA salary at ₹2.5 lakh per month.

It is followed by Delhi (₹2.25 lakh), Maharashtra (₹2 lakh) and Uttar Pradesh (₹1.87 lakh), while states like Haryana and Andhra Pradesh offer similar benefits to those in Bihar.

Kerala pays its legislators the least, with a monthly draw of ₹70,000.
