Guwahati, Nov 25: A dramatic spike in egg prices has left consumers in Assam shocked, transforming a basic protein source into a luxury item.

The cost of a single egg has surged by Rs 3 in just a few days, marking an unprecedented rise. Currently, eggs are priced at Rs 10 each, compelling retailers to charge between Rs 240 and Rs 260 for a plate of 30 eggs in the retail market.

A vendor from the Ganeshguri market noted that the escalating wholesale prices are creating challenges for small sellers.

"In the past 15 to 20 days, prices have been climbing daily. We are now purchasing eggs at Rs 8 each. Just a week ago, a plate was priced around Rs 210-Rs 220. This latest increase is the steepest we've seen. If this trend continues, a plate could soon cost Rs 280," he explained. A month ago, egg prices were between Rs 190 and Rs 210 per plate.

"A carton that used to cost Rs 1400 has now risen to Rs 1550 or more in some areas. Even during the lockdown due to Covid-19, prices never reached this level," he added.

Residents throughout the city are expressing their concerns regarding the escalating costs of essential food items.

"Eggs are one of the most economical protein sources for families like ours. My children want them daily, and they are crucial for their nutrition and growth. The rising prices are making it difficult to stick to our monthly budget,” shared Rina Das, a homemaker from Maligaon.

Another consumer, Abhijit Kakati, a student preparing for competitive exams, remarked, "We rely heavily on eggs for our meals, especially as hostellers. If prices keep climbing, we may have to reduce our consumption."

Market insiders indicate that this sharp increase is not confined to Assam but is being observed nationwide. Assam, which depends significantly on supplies from other states, is experiencing the impact more acutely.

Wholesalers attribute the price hike to rising costs in producing states and the stockpiling of eggs in cold storage in anticipation of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

"Demand is rising everywhere, while supplies are being intentionally withheld. This situation is unlikely to stabilize anytime soon," stated a wholesaler from Hatigaon.

Consumers are hoping for government intervention to regulate prices and prevent exploitation.

"We urge the authorities to address this issue. Essential food items should not become unaffordable," a local resident expressed.
