Ayodhya: ‘Dharma Dhwaja’, the triangular saffron flag hoisted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir on Tuesday is significant in more ways than one.

Symbolic of the completion of the entire temple’s construction, the ceremony was held on Vivah Panchami, which was celebrated on Tuesday to mark the marriage of Lord Ram and Sita.

Significantly, the flag for Ram Mandir has been created in such a way so as to resist wind speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. The weather-resistant flag is designed to withstand storms and rain.

It is mounted on a 42-foot rotating mast equipped with a nylon support rope and an automated hoisting mechanism.

The flag, measuring 10 feet in height and 20 feet in length, bears the image of a radiant sun, the symbol Om and Kovidara tree, inscribed on it. It was hoisted on a 191-foot shikhar of the temple built in the traditional Nagara architectural style.

Kovidara tree is a hybrid of Mandar and Parijat trees, created by Rishi Kashyap, and showcases ancient plant hybridisation. The radiant sun on the flag represents Lord Ram’s Suryavansh lineage, while Om is the eternal spiritual sound.

Made in Ahmedabad, it took 25 days to make the flag using a parachute-grade material to ensure longevity.
