Aadhaar Update Rules: UIDAI Releases New Document List, Making Name, Address & Date of Birth Changes Easier
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a revised list of acceptable documents for updating details in Aadhaar. With the introduction of the updated guidelines, the process of changing name, address, date of birth (DOB), and relationship details has become simpler and more transparent. Many users earlier faced difficulties in submitting the correct documents during Aadhaar updates, but the new rules aim to resolve those challenges effectively.
The updated list clearly defines valid documents for:
PoI (Proof of Identity)
PoA (Proof of Address)
DoB (Proof of Date of Birth)
PoR (Proof of Relationship)
A major improvement in the new policy is that a single document containing the person’s name, photo, and address can now serve as both PoI and PoA. Earlier, individuals had to provide two separate documents, making the process more time-consuming.
UIDAI now officially accepts several key documents for updating the name. The most trusted and widely recognized among them is the passport, which includes a person’s name, photo, date of birth, and address.
Other valid documents include:
PAN Card
Voter ID (EPIC Card)
Driving License
Government-issued ID Cards
Marriage Certificate, useful for name change after marriage
These documents ensure accurate identity verification and reduce the chances of application rejection.
The list of valid documents for address updates is extensive. Accepted documents include:
Passport
Bank Passbook or Bank Account Statement (only if updated recently)
Utility Bills such as electricity, water, or gas (not older than three months)
Updated Voter ID
Ration Card
House Tax or Property Tax receipt
For tenants, a registered rent agreement along with police verification or notary documents is required as supporting proof. This ensures smooth verification for those living in rented properties.
For making corrections or updates to the date of birth, the following documents are considered valid:
Birth Certificate
Passport
10th or 12th Class Marksheet
Physical PAN Card (e-PAN is not acceptable)
Government Identity Cards that clearly mention the date of birth
Applicants must ensure that the documents submitted are original and free from any overwriting or modification, as tampered documents can be rejected.
UIDAI has specified limits for certain types of changes:
Name can be updated twice
Date of Birth and Gender can be updated only once
All documents must be original and clearly readable
Any sign of manipulation or illegitimate editing may lead to rejection by UIDAI.
