Afghanistan Birth Rate: Afghanistan is one of those countries where significant restrictions are imposed on women. Let us tell you at what age women in Afghanistan become mothers.

Fertility rate in Afghanistan

Age at First Birth in Afghanistan: Afghanistan is one of the countries where early motherhood is common, and fertility rates are among the highest globally. Social structure, traditions, and economic conditions combine to create a situation where girls embrace motherhood very early. According to international data, the average age of first motherhood in Afghanistan is 19.9 years. This means that a large number of girls give birth before they reach 20. In many communities, this age is even lower, due to early marriage, lack of education, and limited health facilities

The fertility rate is quite high.

When it comes to fertility rates, this statistic is even more astonishing. In Afghanistan, a woman gives birth to an average of 4.84 children in her lifetime. This rate ranks among the countries with the highest fertility rates in the world. Although the rate has declined from 7.28 in 1960 to around five, its high level still points to serious social and health challenges. This decline in the birth rate has been slow, and given the current situation, it is unlikely to decline rapidly in the coming years.

rapidly growing population

A major reason for the country's rapid population growth is the high birth rate. Between 2022 and 2023 alone, the number of births exceeded the number of deaths by 1.228 million. This means that Afghanistan's population increased by approximately 3 percent, without taking into account natural migration. This growth could put significant pressure on the country's social, economic, and health systems in the future.

Teenage motherhood is also a major concern in Afghanistan. The birth rate among girls aged 15 to 19 declined from 140.6 per 1,000 in 1960 to 64.1 per 1,000 in 2023. This decline is certainly positive, but it remains significantly higher than average. Despite some progress in education and awareness, motherhood remains a part of girls' early lives. This is why, in 2024, approximately 24 percent of the country's total population was women of reproductive age (15 to 49 years). The status of women in Afghanistan has changed significantly since the Taliban's arrival. According to media reports, women's education has been significantly restricted, and many strict regulations have been imposed on them.
