Manpreet Singh, popularly known as Comic Singh, is a comedian who masterfully combines everyday Punjabi humor with sharp social commentary and heartfelt narratives.
With a name he humorously refers to as his 'Aadhaar name,' Manpreet has made a name for himself across various platforms, including YouTube, live performances, and television, over the past seven years. His inaugural television show, Befikran Di Rasoi, not only showcases his comedic talent but also encapsulates the lively essence of a Punjabi household—chaotic, warm, and irresistibly funny.
The concept of Befikran Di Rasoi is designed as a TV-style comedy experience that blends hosting with spontaneous humor, steering clear of a rigid script. The first episode featured guests like Jashanpreet Singh, Anmol Magic, and actress Tania. Rather than adopting a conventional hosting style, Comic Singh embraced a more organic approach, delivering spontaneous jokes and engaging with his guests, allowing humor to emerge naturally from their interactions.
Comic Singh's path, while often recounted with humor, is grounded in real-life experiences. He began his career in Amritsar, working at KFC in 2009, and later transitioned to Domino’s as an assistant restaurant manager in 2013. Comedy was not initially on his radar until a pivotal moment at an annual office meeting seven years ago, where he performed a brief comedic act for his colleagues and felt an undeniable spark. “Maza hi bada aaya,” he recalls, a moment that inspired him to leave his stable job and embark on the unpredictable journey of stand-up comedy. As a middle-class individual who left a secure position, his choice was audacious but ultimately led to a remarkable career.
In just a few years, Comic Singh's performances have taken him to 21 countries, including Hong Kong, Norway, Sweden, and Germany, as well as international Punjabi hubs like New Zealand. Although he performs primarily in Punjabi, he has not encountered the typical struggles associated with language barriers. His relatability and the expanding global Punjabi community have helped him cultivate a loyal audience.
At the core of his comedy lies the delightful chaos of Punjabi life—noisy family dynamics, traditional Sunday rituals, and the quirky absurdities of daily existence. However, he maintains clear ethical boundaries. “There are topics I would never joke about,” he asserts, emphasizing the importance of respecting his identity, including his turban.
Comic Singh's humor stems from keen observations rather than mockery. “No comedian aims to offend,” he stresses, encouraging audiences to appreciate the space for satire. His comedic influences include the late Jaspal Bhatti, Bhagwant Mann, and Amanullah Khan, who skillfully blended humor with social messages. He expresses admiration for the depth of Rana Ranbir, the brilliance of Gurpreet Ghuggi, and the emotional intelligence found in Punjabi comedic cinema.
He notes that half of his material is based on real-life experiences, particularly jokes about Punjabi families and fathers, while the other half is creatively exaggerated. His writing process is methodical: he crafts his own jokes and tests them for a year before finalizing any special. Balancing his work between Amritsar and Chandigarh, he remarks, “Real humor is in Amritsar.”
Comic Singh observes that the comedy scene is rapidly evolving, yet he feels there is little competition. “I am the only one doing stand-up comedy in Punjabi. I hope more people will join,” he expresses.
He believes that comedy often emerges from darker places. Much like the Joker’s mask, comedians often conceal their pain behind laughter while managing life's pressures—groceries, bills, and responsibilities—alongside their performances.
As he ventures further into television, he leaves a simple message for his audience: “Dekhde raho. The more you watch an artist, the more they create for you.”
From the fast-food counters of Amritsar to stages around the world, Comic Singh's journey exemplifies how genuine and heartfelt humor can transcend borders and unite people everywhere. You can catch Befikran Di Rasoi streaming on Pitaara TV.
