'Sholay: Final Cut' fails to make an impact; earns ₹1.4cr

The re-release of the iconic film Sholay, titled Sholay: The Final Cut, has reportedly earned around ₹1.4cr in its first three days at the box office.

Despite facing tough competition from Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar, the film is expected to cross the ₹1.5cr mark soon.

The restored version features deleted scenes and Ramesh Sippy's original ending, where Thakur kills Gabbar. It was also special as it served as a tribute to late actor Dharmendra who passed away on November 24.

Release hurdles

The film was initially claimed to be releasing on 1,500 screens across India. However, it only managed to secure 373 shows nationwide with an overall occupancy of just 13.14%.

On its opening day, the film earned around ₹30L, which was far below expectations for what was projected as the "biggest-ever re-release of a restored film."

Singh's Dhurandhar has been a major roadblock for Sholay: The Final Cut.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, "On November 15, the team behind Sholay: The Final Cut-restoration partner Film Heritage Foundation and producers Sippy Films-announced the December 12 release."

"Interestingly, FHF's social media post claimed the film would release on 1,500 screens. However, this figure was conspicuously absent from the posts of Sippy Films and Pen."

Film controversy

The film's special screening at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) was abruptly canceled, with official reasons citing Dharmendra's sudden passing.

However, later speculation suggested "technical glitches from the makers' side" may have been the real cause.

Adding to the controversy was a change in dialogue in its trailer, where an iconic James Bond reference was replaced with Tatya Tope.
