'I'm most successful failure': Reema Kagti on 'Malegaon's box-office debacle
20 Dec 2025

Filmmaker Reema Kagti recently opened up about the discouraging box-office performance of her film, Superboys of Malegaon.

Speaking candidly, she said making a blockbuster is easier than creating a good film.

She told The Hollywood Reporter India, "You can cook a blockbuster. You put in a few formulas. Making a good film...has to come from inside."

The movie stars Adarsh Gourav, Viineet Kumar Siingh, and Shashank Arora.

Disappointment acknowledged

Kagti didn't hold back in admitting her disappointment over Superboys of Malegaon underperforming at the box office.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. I believe it was one of the lowest openers or enders," she confessed.

However, she also highlighted the love and appreciation the film has received since its release. "I also got the most amount of love for it."

"Failure has taught me more than any success. I think I'm the most successful failure."

Kagti's commitment to authentic filmmaking
Filmmaking philosophy

Kagti emphasized her dedication to making films that resonate with her personally.

"I don't see myself making a film that's engineered just to do well. I'm just not that kind of writer or director," she said. "I'll always do something I have a strong connection to and hope for the best."

"It's really important to enjoy writing it, making it and putting it out there. Because sometimes that's all you get."

Emotional aftermath

Kagti acknowledged that moving on from a film's failure isn't an overnight process.

"You're not okay the next day. It does take time," she said, adding that while experience helps, the feeling of disappointment never really goes away.

"If someone comes to you even after 10 years and says that film of yours was very good, that really matters," she added.
