Michael van Gerwen has been lauded for his "classy" gesture after the darts star defended his ex-wife Daphne Govers. The Dutchman has been in action at the World Darts Championship over the festive period but was knocked out in the fourth round by Gary Anderson on Tuesday evening.

Van Gerwen, who lost to Luke Littler in last year's final at Alexandra Palace, labelled 2025 as his "worst year" following his separation. He took some time away from the oche following his break-up, but went on to taste victory at the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam in September. However, he was unable to claim a quarter-final spot at the World Championship after being outplayed by Anderson.

Van Gerwen's ex-wife sat down with her new partner, Robert, for an interview with Shownieuws this week.

During the chat, Robert revealed that he had known Daphne for "a long time" before she became single. And the couple, who are now expecting a baby, said they had "always clicked".

Van Gerwen has encountered Robert due to the custody arrangements of his two children, Mike and Zoe, who he shares with Daphne.

And Robert admitted: "I find it difficult. Of course, I pulled that trick on him, and I'm not proud of it, but hey, I chose my own happiness, and he's welcome here."

Meanwhile, Daphne explained during the interview: "I couldn't have gotten pregnant naturally. If it does happen, it'll be a miracle. My world was completely turned upside down. How am I going to handle this? But in the end, it all worked out. It's more than welcome."

And she added: "Of course, a mistake was made on my part. Everyone knows that. We don't have to hide that. I'd rather keep the story private."

Daphne was criticised by some people after the interview aired. But Van Gerwen publicly defended his former partner as he stated the show had played "dirty games".

And his gesture was praised by former cyclist and four-time Olympic gold medallist Leontien van Moorsel, who explained: "Michael really protected her.

"If my man had done that to me, I certainly wouldn't have protected him. But that does credit to Michael, because they have two children together.

"I thought that was real class. When something like this happens and, in such a short time, you protect your ex like that, I think you truly do it for the kids. That does him credit. He has been in a lot of pain, but he shows he can rise above it."
