Peter Sellers reached the heights of fame with his acting career, but struggled throughout his personal life. The on-screen star, who married four times and fathered three children, looked to have everything but despite his fame and riches it wasn't enough. Often credited as one of the greatest comedians of all time, Peter had a tragic inability to enjoy life. He was world famous but desperately lonely.
An enigmatic figure, Peter struggled with depression and mental insecurities throughout his life. He was known to act erratic on and off set and frequently clashed with his co-stars and fellow directors behind the scenes.
His personal life was not much different as his former wife, Britt Eckland, would later allege the comic would choose what she should wear and threatened her with divorce "every Friday night - and by Monday there would be a make-up lunch or present."
"He obviously suffered from or was bipolar, severely bipolar," Ekland claimed. "He was a very tormented soul who should have had more help. But instead, he was unable [to] because he was such a valuable asset."
While famed for his glittering on-screen career he was also known for his romantic pursuits.
He married four times, first to Anne Howe, then Britt Ekland, followed by Miranda Macmillan and finally Lynne Frederick.
Peter and Anne met while she was studying to be an actress at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). They had two children together, son Michael Sellers born in 1954, and daughter Sarah Sellers three years later.
The couple wed in 1951 but called it quits a decade later. When the relationship was on the rocks, Peter would wake his children at night and manically ask them who they'd prefer to live with should there be a divorce. He went into a rage when the children explained they wanted to stay with their mother.
Peter went to marry Britt Eckland after only ten days of knowing each other. The pair tied the knot in 1964 but the marriage ended just four years later.
He first saw Britt in a newspaper and was determined to date her. She was only 21 at the time of their union and had just moved to London. Peter was possessive and tricked Britt into taking time off from filming, but never let her return back to set so that her part got re-cast and filmed.
The couple welcomed their daughter Victoria Sellers in 1965.
The Swedish actress remarried once after Peter, but one of her most notable relationship was with Rod Stewart.
A year after their divorce, Peter married aristocrat Miranda Macmillan (formerly Quarry). They split after four years of marriage in 1974.
His fourth and final marriage was to actress Lynne Frederick. It's been reported that Peter tried to change his will hours before he died to stop his wealth going to her, but it wasn't processed in time so she inherited his entire estate, leaving his children with £800 each.
Peter's relationships with his children was fraught at times. He died July 24, 1980 after suffering a massive heart attack.
A year later his son Michael wrote the memoir P.S. I Love You, the first of two books about his experiences as the late actor's child. He alleged that his dad was a "spiteful and neglectful parent," who would ultimately disown him.
He recalled his dad had all of his toys and other belongings packed up from his home and shipped to where Michael was living with his mother following their split.
The pair would maintain contact, however, Michael and his sister Sarah would eventually be disinherited by their father with the majority of his $5million estate being left to their stepmother Lynne Frederick.
Michael sadly died of a heart attack in 2006, on the same day as his dad. He was 52, just two years shy of Peter's age at the time of his death.
