Greggs boasts more than 2,600 of its bakeries across the UK, serving millions of customers on a weekly basis. Its most popular product - the sausage roll - is enjoyed by more than one million people every day, according to the company's data.
According to food expert, Sunna van Kampen who is known as TonicHealth on social media, it's important to know what we're eating exactly, meanwhile. He took to TikTok recently to reveal what ingredients are included in the chain's sausage rolls. "Everyone loves their Greggs ', but have you ever wondered what's in their sausage rolls?" Sunna began in a TikTok video.
Sunna went on to explain that when purchasing Greggs' food from one of their stores within a Tesco supermarket, ingredients are always included on the packaging.
"What's actually unbelievable is that they [sausage rolls] are only 22% pork," he exclaimed.
Sunny continued: "If there was an actual sausage in there, it wouldn't be that bad - but what you are actually getting is just 22 percent pork - with carrageenan, methyl cellulose, emulsifiers, preservatives, stabilisers, added sugar and added sunflower oil."
He closed his clip by hitting out: "That is not food. You've got to ditch the Greggs sausage roll."
The reaction to Sunny's revelation was a mixed one, however. One TikTok user said: "I steadfastly refuse to eat anything from Greggs. It truly is the rock bottom of the food chain. Truly disgusting stuff."
A second person added: "Good to call these businesses out. Hopefully will make them change. Do better Greggs."
While a third shared: "I sometimes pick these up at highway services to take home for kids. Never again."
Conversely though, others admitted they weren't going to stop consuming the sausage rolls any time soon.
"I don’t know anyone who gets a Gregg sausage rolls to meet their protein target," one TikTok user stated.
Another asked: "Have you ever tried a sausage with 100% pork? It’s a pork chop, we know it’s bad and we don’t care."
And a third commented in support: "One thing I won’t give up."
Greggs says of its sausage rolls online: "Freshly baked in our shops throughout the day, this British classic is made from seasoned sausage meat wrapped in layers of crisp, golden puff pastry, as well as a large dollop of TLC. It’s fair to say, we’re proper proud of them.
"And that’s it. No clever twist. No secret ingredient. It’s how you like them, so that’s how we make them."
According to Tesco, the Greggs' sausage roll comprehensive ingredients list is as follows: "Water, Fortified Wheat Flour (Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Pork (20%), Palm Oil, Rusk(Wheat), Salt, Wheat Protein, Rapeseed Oil, Wheat Gluten, Modified Starch, Yeast Extract, Pea Fibre, Sugar, Sunflower Oil, Stabiliser (Diphosphates, Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, Carrageenan, Cellulose), White Pepper, Milk Protein, Acidity Regulator (Tartaric Acid, Sodium Phosphates), Barley Malt Extract, Preservative (Sodium Metabisulphite), Spice Extracts, Emulsifier (Mono- and Diacetyl Tartaric Acid Esters of Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids), Skimmed Milk Powder, Herb Extracts, Colour (Carotenes)."
