The weather outside might still be freezing, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy an ice cream. Although perhaps more traditionally a summer treat, ice cream is delicious year round. If you're looking for a sweet treat, then you can't go far with a chocolate dipped vanilla ice cream and consumer watchdog Which? Has revealed the best you can buy.
To find out which ice cream was the best of the best, Which? Asked a panel of 60 people to blind taste test Magnum Classic ice creams alongside nine supermarket own labels, including options from Aldi and Marks and Spencer.
One supermarket brand came in a tied first place with the Magnum original.
This was the Marks and Spencer Chocolate Sticks, with an approval rating of 82 percent.
The majority of taste testers said they liked the sweetness and strength of the chocolate and vanilla flavours. Coming in at £2.40 for three 110ml ice creams (80p per ice cream), they were one of the most expensive own-brand options, but still a pound cheaper than Magnums.
Tied with M&S was the original Magnum with the same approval rating of 82 percent. Tasters loved the well-balanced sweetness, vanilla flavour and indulgent creamy texture of the treats.
Magnums are the most expensive option from the taste test at £3.50 for a pack of three so it might pay to keep an eye out for sales.
In third place with an approval rating of 79 percent was Lidl's Gelatelli Classic Ice Cream sticks. Tasters enjoyed this option, saying they had the right sweetness, creaminess and vanilla flavour. Less than half the price of Magnums, and slightly larger too, these are a great budget option.
In third place was Aldi Gianni's Milk Chocolate Ice Creams with a score of 77%. At £1.69 for four 100ml ice creams (42p per ice cream), these were the cheapest of the ice creams. Although they rated well on flavour, some tasters thought the ice cream wasn't creamy enough.
