A supermarket's own-label spreadable butter has been named better than Lurpak in a recent taste test. Spreadable butter is a staple item in the weekly trolleys of many UK shoppers. Many of us use quite a bit of it on a regular basis, whether it's for sandwiches or toast. Some people will have their favourite brands, while other cost-conscious consumers will usually just go for whatever is cheapest. You might assume that the more expensive product is always the better option, but that isn't necessarily the case, certainly not when it comes to spreadable butter.

The consumer group Which? recently completed a blind taste test involving spreadable butter available in major UK supermarkets, and the popular Lurpak brand was beaten by a cheaper own-label alternative. The consumer advocates regularly conduct taste tests of common supermarket products, and recently also completed a cheddar cheese and sourdough taste test. When it comes to spreadable butter, a cheap one that snooty shoppers might turn their nose up at is actually the best, according to the recent findings from Which?.

The blind taste test involved 67 participants, each given their own tasting booth and samples that were not labelled, so the results are completely unbiased.

Eight supermarket butter spreads were included in the study, such as Lurpak as well as own-label products from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and Morrisons. The winner was Aldi Nordpak, which costs £2.18 for a 500g tub.

In comparison, Lurpak, a higher-end brand from Denmark, took fourth place. Lurpak is considerably more expensive, priced at £4.89 for a 500g tub at the likes of Tesco.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services commented, "A spreadable butter that can be used straight out of the fridge and without making a mess of your bread can save time and stress.

"We've churned through offerings from the main supermarkets and found Aldi's Nordpak is not only the tastiest tub on test, but also less than half the price of its branded counterpart."

Aldi's own-label butter spread scored an impressive 75% when reviewed by more than 60 blind testers. It was praised for both its taste and texture.

It was followed in close second by M&S Lightly Salted Butter Blend, which scored 74%. In third place is Morrisons Salted Spreadable with a 73% score, followed by Lurpak in fourth place with a score of 72%.

  • Waitrose Spreadable
  • Own-label products are set to rule the supermarkets in 2026, according to retail experts. According to Kantar and IGD data, 53% of sales at Aldi, 67% at Lidl, and 52% at Tesco were made up of own-label goods towards the end of last year.

    Additionally, own-label supermarket sales hit close to £1 billion in December 2025. Oisin Hanrahan, a Tesco-backed supply chain and supermarket expert, predicts 2026 is the year own-label products become star buys in their own right.

    Meanwhile, personal finance expert Kevin Marshall said that the difference in quality between premium brands and own-label products is becoming increasingly less noticeable.
