After the fuel crisis worsened, the Bangladesh government has decided to temporarily close all the government and private universities in the country. This decision has been implemented from Monday, March 9 so that fuel and electricity consumption can be reduced.

According to reports, the Tariq Rahman-led Bangladesh Nationalist Party government has also postponed the Eid holidays in view of the energy crisis. The government believes that this will reduce electricity consumption and fuel will be saved by reducing traffic on the roads.

According to government officials, universities require large amounts of electricity to run facilities like hostels, classrooms, laboratories and air conditioning. In such a situation, declaring holidays ahead of time will reduce the pressure on the power system.

Before this, government and private schools have also been closed for the entire month of Ramadan. It is noteworthy that Bangladesh depends on imports for about 95 percent of its domestic energy needs.

Due to fuel shortage, the government has also set a daily limit on the purchase of petrol and diesel. Apart from this, private coaching centers and schools with foreign courses have also been instructed to temporarily stop their activities. The fuel crisis has also affected the industrial sector. Due to this, the operation of four government-run fertilizer factories has been stopped for the time being.

“We are taking all possible steps to reduce fuel consumption and maintain stable power, fuel and import supplies,” a government official said. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has sought help from neighboring India to deal with the crisis. Bangladesh has requested supply of 50,000 tonnes of diesel over the next four months from India’s Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Assam’s Numaligarh Refinery Ltd.
