Chelsea bosses have an awkward choice when it comes to deciding the future of manager Liam Rosenior. The former Strasbourg head coach was appointed to replace Enzo Maresca earlier this year but questions are now being asked. Results haven't been up to scratch and his unorthodox approach to management has raised more than a few eyebrows.

It's been reported that Rosenior refuses to wear gloves on the training ground so that his Chelsea players will clearly hear his applause, while he is also said to have staged Lego-building contests. Those rumours, along with the Blues' bizarre pre-match huddle, which has quickly become farcical, have done little to boost Rosenior's credibility as a serious operator capable of leading one of Europe's biggest clubs.

It would be more acceptable if those unusual methods had translated into consistently strong results, but that hasn't been the case as of yet.

While the ex-Hull City defender has won 10 of his 18 matches since taking charge of Chelsea, their performances have left plenty to be desired.

They were taken to extra time by Wrexham, who were a non-league club as recently as 2022, in the FA Cup earlier this month. That performance was followed by three straight defeats, including two hammerings at the hands of PSG in the Champions League.

Over both legs of their last-16 showdown, it was like men against boys. The reigning European champions were streets ahead of their English rivals, illustrating the current gulf in class between Chelsea and the type of team they aspire to be.

Their wretched recent form has led to growing discontent among supporters, with at least one fan group planning to stage a protest against the ownership in the near future.

If Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League, the owners will make Rosenior the fall guy. That leaves him facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, just weeks after he was handed a bumper six-and-a-half-year contract.

Chelsea aren't exactly renowned for giving managers time and those in power will undoubtedly be frustrated at how things have played out, especially in light of their crushing defeat to PSG over two legs.

It's now time for the likes of Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and Paul Winstanley to make an important decision. They can either stick with Rosenior or twist yet again in the hope of sparking a revival of the club's fortunes.

Whatever happens will likely decide Chelsea's fate next season, as well as shaping how they will finish the current campaign.

Another slow start in 2026/27 will leave the Blues scrambling to appoint yet another manager, at which point they will be playing catch-up to their Premier League rivals at the top of the table.

For this reason, they might decide to axe Rosenior now rather than wait if they are not truly convinced that he is the right man for the job.

However, relieving the 41-year-old of his duties would likely result in Chelsea forking out millions of pounds in a costly severance package, given the extraordinary length of his contract.

As a result, they find themselves in an unenviable situation, but it will need to be addressed one way or another if the west Londoners are serious about becoming a top side once again.
