Chaitra Navratri Begins: Day 1 Overview

Chaitra Navratri – Day 1: Today marks the beginning of Chaitra Navratri, which falls on Thursday, March 19. This sacred period is dedicated to the veneration of Goddess Bhagavati, focusing on worship, spiritual practices, and the pursuit of spiritual powers. It also serves as an excellent opportunity to enhance both physical and mental wellness. According to the *Devi Bhagavata*, the Goddess embodies the forces of creation, preservation, and destruction through the divine trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

The Significance of Day One and Worship Rituals

On this auspicious day, following the *Kalash Sthapana* ritual, devotees honor the first form of Goddess Durga, known as 'Shailputri'. The commencement of Chaitra Navratri on April 19, 2026, symbolizes the initiation of spiritual practices for seekers. This day represents a commitment to faith and marks the beginning of a nine-day spiritual journey.

Understanding Shailputri: Iconography and Spiritual Importance

Shailputri, meaning 'Daughter of the Mountain', is revered as the daughter of the Himalayas. She is depicted riding a bull (*Vrishabha*), holding a trident (*Trishul*) in her right hand and a lotus in her left. Among the *Navadurgas*, Shailputri is the foremost manifestation, and her worship is believed to activate the *Muladhara Chakra* (Root Chakra), laying the groundwork for a yogic journey and fostering stability in the devotee's life.

Worship Rituals for Shailputri

On the first day of Navratri, after performing morning rituals, devotees should wear clean clothes and purify the worship area. The *Kalash Sthapana* ritual should be conducted according to traditional guidelines, followed by the installation of an idol or image of Maa Shailputri, which should be sanctified with holy Ganges water. Offerings of *Roli* (vermilion), *Akshat* (sacred rice), flowers, and fragrant blooms are made. It is auspicious to present white garments, a ghee lamp, and pure ghee or sweet preparations as *Naivedya* (food offerings). During the worship, chant the mantra ‘Om Devi Shailputryai Namah’ and perform the *Aarti* with devotion. Conclude by meditating on the Goddess while focusing on your heartfelt wishes.

Benefits of Worship and Divine Grace

Maa Shailputri embodies the essence of Goddess Parvati and is known to be easily pleased by sincere worship. Her blessings bring stability, mental tranquility, and positive energy into the lives of her devotees. Worship conducted with genuine faith revitalizes the spiritual seeker’s life.

Cultivating Inner Strength and Stability

For those experiencing restlessness or a lack of inner strength, worshipping Shailputri is particularly beneficial. Devotion to her nurtures courage, patience, and self-confidence, reinforcing the foundational aspects of life and encouraging progress along the spiritual path.
