Visitors have been left astonished to discover that a village appearing to belong somewhere along the Mediterranean coastline is actually nestled in Wales, and is open for you to explore yourself.
While travelling abroad can be both expensive and stressful, staycations offer a brilliant opportunity to enjoy a break closer to home. Fortunately, Wales is brimming with hidden gem destinations that make for an ideal staycation.
However, if you're still yearning for that holiday feeling, this North Wales village could be precisely what you're looking for, as it bears a striking resemblance to Italy.
Taking to TikTok, travel enthusiasts Caz and Gaz shared footage from their visit to this historic and iconic North Wales village, expressing their astonishment at everything they encountered.
"Would you believe me if I told you this isn't an Italian village, but it's actually somewhere in the UK," Cez said in the video. "This dreamy village was designed in the 1920s by a Welsh architect who wanted to bring a touch of the Mediterranean to Britain, and it took nearly 50 years to build."
The village in question is Portmeirion, a tourist destination and holiday resort situated in Gwynedd, North Wales. It was established by architect Clough Williams-Ellis, whose vision was to demonstrate how a naturally stunning location could be developed without causing damage, while proving that sympathetic development could actually enhance the natural surroundings.
And it seems like he succeeded, as holidaymakers frequently praise the resort's distinctive architecture that makes them feel as though they've truly arrived on holiday.
"It's tucked away on the coast and it's full of colourful buildings, secret gardens, sandy beaches, and even a giant chessboard," Cez added, before showing various clips from their visit.
"It honestly feels like walking through a storybook," Cez said. "It's the perfect spot for summer photos, getting your steps in, or enjoying some delicious food."
She continued by revealing they'd enjoyed a three-course Sunday dinner, which she said 'did not disappoint'. Ordering a two- or three-course meal at the village will also grant you complimentary entry to the resort.
People quickly flocked to the comment section to share their own views, with many left astonished that this was situated in the UK.
"We've been there last year. The Beach is amazing , but The Portmeirion was so busy. Loved it tho," one user wrote.
Another person said: "My parents came here to celebrate with family and friends after getting married, such a beautiful place. The wedding photos are gorgeous, lucky to have such beautiful places on my doorstep."
Someone else also shared: "The 60's tv series 'the prisoner' was filmed there."
However, another person wrote: "No thanks, I'll go to Italy instead and see the real thing... for less probably..."
