Vanity vans have now become an essential part of film shoots in India, giving actors a private space to relax, change costumes, and escape the harsh outdoor conditions. But before these mobile luxury rooms became commonplace, actors, particularly female artists, faced numerous challenges during outdoor shoots. They often had to endure the heat, dust, and lack of proper facilities, with many forced to travel back to their hotels just for costume changes or lunch breaks.
The introduction of vanity vans in India changed the film industry, providing much-needed comfort and convenience to actors on set. However, the credit for bringing this game-changing concept to Indian cinema doesn’t go to any of the legendary male superstars nor to popular actresses, instead, it was veteran actress Poonam Dhillon who introduced the idea of vanity vans to the Indian film industry .

Poonam, known for her roles in films like ' Trishul ', 'Kaala Pathar', and 'Teri Meherbaniyan', got the idea while shooting abroad, that such mobile units were referred to as trailers or makeup vans. Recognizing the immense potential for improving working conditions on Indian film sets, Poonam decided to bring this concept home. She converted a bus into a mobile utility van equipped with air conditioning, a makeup room, and a toilet. It was Poonam who coined the term " vanity van ," which has now become a generic term in the industry.

Earlier this year, Poonam shared nostalgic photos on Instagram. The images, which included moments with Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, highlighted the early days of her vanity van. She wrote, "I didnt realise I was making Film History when i launched my first mobile makeup van "VANITY ". Today Vanity has become generic word to describe a makeup van . Most Artists thank me for introducing the concept to the Film Industry !! Earlier had tough time shooting on location- no toilets, no place for meals or changing clothes, sitting in heat & dust".
In her post, she expressed how she hadn’t realized the impact her innovation would have, but today, nearly every actor in the industry benefits from the convenience of vanity vans.
