The Royal Family, including the King and Queen as well as the Prince and Princess of Wales, have embarked on their annual summer retreat to Balmoral in Scotland, a tradition which offers the senior royals a chance to relax and enjoy some quality time together. However, the trip to the Scottish Highlands is not just about relaxation - it also presents an opportunity for the family to discuss recent events and contemplate the future of the monarchy.

Amid media speculation of a potential "summit" at Balmoral, it seems plausible that 75 year old King Charles could instigate crucial conversations about the future direction of the Royal Family. Former BBC Royal correspondent, Jennie Bond, shared her thoughts with OK! on the possibility of such a meeting.

She suggested it would be "slightly odd" if the royals didn't discuss current affairs while gathered together.

"I have no information that there is going to be a royal summit at Balmoral. But it would be slightly odd if the family were all together for once and didn't mull over what has happened and how they proceed in the future," Jennie told the publication.

She further disclosed that during the 1990s, formal discussions were more common at Balmoral. Jennie added: "Back in the 90s there was a more formal setup when senior royals discussed strategy in a forum known as The Way Ahead Group. Its aim was the ensure that the monarchy stayed relevant to the modern age."

Similar discussions could be on the cards at Balmoral this summer, particularly as Prince William is "preoccupied" with the task of "keeping the monarchy relevant". However, it's important to remember that the Royals, like us, enjoy a bit of downtime on their holidays.

"There may be some similar discussions at Balmoral, William is certainly preoccupied with keeping the monarchy relevant, but essentially this is a holiday for the royals, a time to stop worrying about everything and like other families on holiday just breathe in the fresh air, relax and enjoy one another's company," Jennie added.

Earlier this week, King Charles and Queen Camilla made their way to Scotland, closely followed by Princess Anne. The Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to arrive with their three children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - marking Kate's first trip away since her cancer diagnosis.
