British tourists are being warned as a major storm warning has been issued for large parts of Spain.

The country's weather agency AEMET has upgraded many of its weather warnings for this weekend (September 21 and 22).

Heavy rain and storms are set to batter the south, centre and east of mainland Spain as well as the Balearic Islands.

Areas with orange alerts tomorrow are the eastern coast from Valencia to Castellon, Tarragona, Menorca, Majorca, Ibiza.

This is the second most serious warning for strong rain and winds and means there is "significant risk" to life.

In place from 4pm to midnight tomorrow, weather experts predict up to 50mm of rain per square metre per hour and winds of between 70kmph and 120kmph.

There are also waterspouts forecast for the sea around the Balearics. These are essentially tornadoes over water that can be very dangerous for passing boats.

There are also lots of yellow alerts, the lowest warning level, in place across Spain tomorrow.

They include the majority of Alicante, including Benidorm, Torrevieja, Elche, Gandia, Lorca and Murcia.

In the south, the majority of Andalucia's coastline is on a yellow alert for heavy rain tomorrow.

This includes all of Almeria's coast, the whole Costa del Sol (including Marbella and Estepona) and the Granada coastline.
