Mahakumbh Mela is not just a religious event, but the Akharas present in it are considered as the 'army' of Sanatan Dharma. To become a part of these Akharas, one has to go through a rigorous process and training. Sanyasis are given training in weapons and scriptures, and only after they are satisfied, they receive initiation. Many strict rules and testing procedures are followed for entry into the Akharas.
Adi Shankaracharya had established Akharas in the 8th century, whose objective was to promote religious activities and protect Sanatan Dharma. With time their number increased to 13, which are divided into Shaiva, Vaishnav and Udasin sects.
Akharas make any Sanyasi go through a difficult process before giving them membership. New ascetics may have to wait even for 10 years. This process includes Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Guarantor and confidential verification. Only after being satisfied, he is given the initiation of Naga Sanyasi.
Akharas are formed like an army, where Naga Sanyasis are given training in both weapons and scriptures. The purpose of their training is to protect religion. Some monks are experts in the scriptures, while others are adept in the knowledge of the scriptures. Naga Sanyasis undergo combat training and always carry a weapon with them, which is used only for the protection of religion.
The Akharas have implemented a stringent vetting system since 2000 to prevent individuals with criminal history. Now the Akharas take new Sanyasis under their shelter only after getting complete information about them. This process is important to keep the akharas safe and respectful.
The contribution and role of these Akharas in Mahakumbh 2025 will be especially worth seeing, because they not only protect the religion but also spread awareness in the society.
