A leading retail analyst has named the cheapest supermarket for deals.

The Grocer has crowned as its cheapest supermarket for deals and discounts following a 'deal heavy blitz', coming in £1.34 cheaper than runner-up .

The analyst looks at branded and non-branded items and compares their prices across , including Cif cream, curry sauce, Schweppes soda water and tomatoes.

It found Asda had deals on 14 items, resulting in savings of £6.03.

But it also found Asda's price inflation, at 7.2%, was higher than any of its rivals.

Despite only running nine deals, offered savings worth £7.55 (or 11.1%) to Clubcard holders and was the only retailer whose basket was cheaper than last year, at 1.9% lower, and it was also £6.35 (9.4%) cheaper than last month.

, which along with had 16 deals this week, was £2.95 more expensive than Asda at £69.51.

It was cheapest for a dozen items but only exclusively so for the Birds Eye fish fingers and kiwis.

was £5.08 more than Asda in its analysis, while Waitrose was the most expensive overall, with a £78.71 total price, a full £12.15 more than Asda.

Sainsbury's ran eight promotions for Nectar members, with in a saving of £4.62 but it was £5.08 more expensive than Asda at £71.64 and was only the cheapest for mushrooms.

It added that Iceland, included this time as a guest retailer, was cheapest for eggs and cheesecake, but 13 of its 15 deals were multibuys, and that it was £5.42 more expensive than Asda overall.
