Need a Passport Urgently? Here’s How to Get It Through the Tatkal Scheme

Traveling abroad requires a passport and visa. But what if you suddenly need to fly overseas and can’t wait for the lengthy process of a regular passport? The Government of India provides a Tatkal Passport service to address such situations. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for an expedited passport, the timeline, and associated costs.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Tatkal Passport?

The usual processing time for a regular passport ranges from 20 to 45 days. In contrast, a Tatkal Passport is issued much faster. However, you must provide a valid reason for the urgency, such as education, medical treatment, or participation in an international event.

Once your application is accepted and the status reads "Granted", the passport is dispatched within three working days. Unlike the regular process, where police verification occurs before issuance, the Tatkal scheme allows for police verification post-issuance. Typically, the entire process is completed within 7 to 14 days.

Steps to Apply for a Tatkal Passport

The application for a Tatkal Passport can be made via the mPassport Seva App or the official Passport Seva portal. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Register Online: Visit the official Passport Seva website and create an account.
  • Choose Passport Type: Select "Fresh" or "Re-issue" as applicable.
  • Select Tatkal Scheme: Under the scheme options, choose Tatkal.
  • Fill the Form: Download and complete the application form online.
  • Make Payment: Submit the application fee and print the receipt.
  • Book an Appointment: Schedule a visit to the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
  • On the appointment date, visit the PSK for document verification and form submission.

What Are the Fees for a Tatkal Passport?
    • A regular 36-page passport costs ₹1,500.
    • A 36-page Tatkal Passport is priced at ₹3,500.
    • A 60-page Tatkal Passport costs ₹4,000.

Note: Children below 8 years and senior citizens receive a 10% discount on regular passports, but no concessions are available for Tatkal Passports.

    Documents Required for Tatkal Passport

To apply for a Tatkal Passport, you must have the following documents:

    • Aadhaar Card
    • PAN Card
    • Birth Certificate
    • Ration Card
    • Voter ID Card
    • Driving License
    • Bank or Post Office Passbook

Ensure you carry two to three of these documents when visiting the Passport Seva Kendra.

The Tatkal Passport scheme is a lifesaver for those who need to travel abroad on short notice. Follow the steps outlined above for a hassle-free application process, and ensure all necessary documents are in order.
