Need a Passport Urgently? Here’s How to Get It Through the Tatkal Scheme
Traveling abroad requires a passport and visa. But what if you suddenly need to fly overseas and can’t wait for the lengthy process of a regular passport? The Government of India provides a Tatkal Passport service to address such situations. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for an expedited passport, the timeline, and associated costs.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Tatkal Passport? The usual processing time for a regular passport ranges from 20 to 45 days. In contrast, a Tatkal Passport is issued much faster. However, you must provide a valid reason for the urgency, such as education, medical treatment, or participation in an international event.
Once your application is accepted and the status reads "Granted", the passport is dispatched within three working days. Unlike the regular process, where police verification occurs before issuance, the Tatkal scheme allows for police verification post-issuance. Typically, the entire process is completed within 7 to 14 days.
