Sports Desk: It is believed that one has to work hard to get admission in IIT. But this is the first time in the history of IIT Madras that five candidates have got admission from sports quota. These admissions have been given under the Sports Excellence Admission Scheme.

Under this scheme, students who have qualified Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced and have performed at international level in sports are eligible for admission to IIT. Head of Center of Excellence in Sports and Analytics of IIT Madras, Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula said that many applications had come under this scheme approved by the IIT Council two years ago. However, five students have got seats on the basis of meeting the required standards.

Pro. Mahesh Panchagnula said, “It is my pleasure to share the benefits of fostering outstanding sporting talent, especially through CESSA. In fact, we are emphasizing on technology in the field of sports which will improve the performance of our athletes and coaches.”

These five have not only performed brilliantly in sports at the international level but also qualified JEE Advanced. Delhi's squash player Nandini Jain, who represented India twice in the Asian Junior Games, has got admission in B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and table tennis player Prabhav Gupta, also from Delhi, has got admission in B.Tech Artificial Engineering (AI).
