Pointless has been gracing our television screens since back in 2009 – and the theme tune is instantly recognisable. However, a recent Reddit conversation has corrected a common misconception.
Hosted by national treasure Alexander Armstrong, pits four duos against one another as they try to come up with the least-known answers across four rounds of general knowledge. The couple that emerges victorious then gets a shot at scooping the show's hefty cash jackpot.
Formerly presented by House of Games host , many people had previously thought that the catchy Pointless theme song was written by Richard's brother, Mat Osman.
Mat is the bassist from 90s rock band Suede and he did move into scoring tunes for TV after Suede's initial split in 2003 - so the connection could make sense.
But Mat's biggest successful theme song for actually for 8 Out of 10 Cats, not Pointless, as revealed on a spirited debate on a Reddit forum recently.
It all kicked off amidst a discussion about celebrated guitarists. Chipping in about their preferred Britpop bassists, the conversation veered into theme songs.
One fan posited: "Yeah, I'd say Alex James from Blur, and Mat Osman from Suede (who is also Richard Osman's brother, and wrote the theme music for Pointless)".
However, they were swiftly set straight by another user who corrected with: "He did the music for 8 Out of 10 Cats, not Pointless".
It turns out that Marc Sylvan is the man behind the tune. He's known for being behind some of Britain's most popular jingles – including the theme for Richard Osman's House of Games.
His other work includes music for The Million Pound Drop, The Masked Singer and Catchphrase. With these shows being franchised globally, Marc Sylvan's signature compositions have echoed across living rooms far and wide. The more you know!
